Samedi aout a 17h30.

Subject: I do not want my money back
Dear Ian,
I don't suppose you remember me, for you probably meet loads of people that do recognize you but which you've never seen before.
I run in to you in the Abbey Book Shop in Paris, somewhere around the end of June this year. I rememberbrowsing the shelves when the owner pointed me to the fact I should buy your book, for this was my once-in-a-lifetime-chance to have it signed by you: you just accidentally walked in. While putting your autograph on the first page, you assured me that if I didn't like the book, I should e-mail you to get my money back.
For me, I found it equally upright on my turn then, to let you know that the contrary is the case.
I have to admit I'm a bit jealous of your experiences in the Cotswolds. Not the moving back to Brussels part, though. What touched me most is the way in which you (seemingly) got accepted so easily. Maybe that's all you need to call a place your home..
After investigating your website (and actually also before that, but there my presumptions were confirmed) I got caught up the social consequences of the processes you describe. The rising house prices, the loss of little heterogenous farms or the rise in 'weekenders'. It sounds familiar to me: not only because I study to become an anthropologist and own bookshelves full of books about how the world is changing, but also because I acknowledge similar things are happening in The Netherlands as well (and all around the globe, for that matter). I think you touched on a very important subject here.
I suppose all I wanted to say is that I'm very happy for you and your wifethat you have this to remember. With your story, you do not only tell about the Cotswold people, but also about yourself. I'm sory I met you before I read the book instead of after. I hope you somehow escaped to fall back in that old feeling you had before you bought the cottage and hope I will once be as lucky to find something as valuable as that.
With kind regards,
Marlous

IW: Tomorrow morning at 07h00 I am leaving THE VALLEY
and going to THE SHOP see a man about a dog.
I do not want to go but I am helping a friend; navigation, translation.
